Box Score Mankato, Minn. ---The Minnesota State football squad raced to a 21-0 lead at halftime en route to a 42-0 victory over Minnesota, Crookston Saturday afternoon in front of 3,725fans in Blakeslee Stadium.
The shutout marked the fourth shutout by the Mavericks under head coach Todd Hoffner and the first since a 52-0 win over MSU Moorhead on Oct. 18, 2008.
Defensively, sophomore defensive end Chris Schaudt paced the Mavericks with nine tackles, including five for a loss to go with three sacks. Eight of Schaudt’s stops came in the first half.
Offensively, the Mavericks used four touchdown passes from senior quarterback Jon Daniels who finished the game completing 13-of-23 passes for 182 yards.
Minnesota State cracked the board first during its second drive of the first quarter when Daniels found senior wide receiver LaMark Brown in the end zonefor a 12-yard catch.
The special teams would block consecutive punts setting up three-yard touchdown run by junior tailback Dale Martin and a 19-yard touchdown catch by junior wideout Dennis Carter from Daniels.
Minnesota State opened the second half with a 74-yard kickoff return by Carter. Four plays later, redshirt freshman tailback Andy Pfeiffer scored his first touchdown as a Maverick rushing six yards into the end zone.
Later in the third quarter, Daniels connected with Brown for the second time in the game with an eight-yard touchdown pass to make it 35-0. The Mavericks continued their attack as they recovered the ball on the kickoff, setting up a 32-yard pass from Daniels to junior wide receiver Adam Thielen.
Pfeiffer finished the game rushing 25 times for 145 yards and a score, whie Martin rushed six times for 39 yards and a score. The 145 yards on the ground marked the second straight game in which Pfeiffer has eclipsed the 100-yard marker.
Theilen finished with five catches for 68 yards and a touchdown to pace the Maverick receiver corps.
Senior Marcus Hall-Oliver also added eight tackles. The defense limited Minnesota, Crookston to just 139 total yards – 127 on the ground and just 12 in the air.
Minnesota State (2-1, 2-0 NSIC) returns to action next Saturday as they travel to St. Paul for a 12 p.m., contest against Concordia University. The game marks the first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference South Division game for MSU.
