MANKATO, Minn. – The Minnesota State Mavericks advanced to the 2011 NSIC/US Bank Soccer Tournament finals as they shutout Minnesota Duluth 4-0 Friday afternoon at the Pitch at Gage Towers.
After a scoreless first half which saw nine total shots on goal (MSU 3, UMD 6), sophomore forward Courtney Vallarellibroke the scoreless contest with a goal assisted by freshman midfielder Emily Moris and Tori Meinhardt at the 53:33 mark. The goal marked Vallarelli’s sixth of the year.
Minnesota State would take a 2-0 lead just five minutes later as Moris connected on her fourth goal of the season on a pass from junior midfielder Brianne West.
The Mavericks remained in control for the remainder of the second period taking a commanding 3-0 lead at the 69:26 mark on Nicole Dooher goal. Junior Cassie Weik assisted the Dooher goal.
MSU ensured the victory at the 73:04 mark as NSIC Offensive Player of the Year Brittany Henry put on the finishing touches with her 14th goal of the year on a pass from Dooher.
Freshman goalkeeper Molly McGough earned her 10th shutout of the year recording three saves in the Mavericks victory.
MSU outshot the Bulldogs 17-8 while they also attempted ten more corner kicks (11-1).
The Mavericks (15-2-3, 10-1-2 NSIC) will take on the fourth-seeded St. Cloud State and at 1 p.m., at the Pitch at Gage Towers for the NSIC/US Bank Championship. The Huskies tied Upper Iowa 1-1 but advances because it won in a shootout 6-5 over the Peacocks.
