Junior forward Eriah Hayes tallied his second goal of the year in MSU's 5-2 loss at #8 Minnesota Duluth Friday.

Defending National Champs Hand Mavericks 5-2 Loss

      Duluth, Minn.  ---  Minnesota State fell 5-2 at eighth-rated Minnesota Duluth Friday in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action.

UMD, the defending national champions, got the game’s first goal at the 3:27 mark of the opening frame after Caleb Herbert took the puck off the wall and after sliding into the slot, fired a shot that beat Austin Lee on the stick side.  MSU owned a 21-9 advantage in the period.

The Bulldogs opened up a 3-0 lead in the middle stanza with J.T. Brown scoring on a shot from in front of the net at 4:56 and another by Caleb Herbert that bounced in off of a MSU defenseman’s skate at 17:23.

Junior forward Eriah Hayes got his second goal of  the year when he scored on a rebound at 1:27 of the third period to make it 3-1.  UMD responded at 3:01 when Jack Connelly ripped a shot past Lee and the Bulldogs got their fifth goal of the night at on a goal by Travis Oleksuk at 5:36. Senior forward Adam Mueller scored his second goal in as many games on a shot that he wired over the shoulder of UMD’s Kenny Reiter at 12:43 to close out the scoring.

Senior defenseman Joe Schiller and senior forward Michael Dorr both contributed two assists in the game.

MSU owned a 36-34 advantage in shots on goal in the game. 

Now 3-8-0, 2-4-0 WCHA on the year, the Mavericks conclude the two-game WCHA set with the Bulldogs (8-3-2, 6-2-1 WCHA) Saturday with a 7:07 p.m. face-off schedule for Amsoil Arena.
