Troy, N.Y. --- Minnesota State scored first, but could not hold off #18 RPI with the Engineers claiming a 4-1 win over the visiting Mavericks in men’s college hockey nonconference action in Troy, N.Y., Saturday night.
The Mavericks opened the scoring in the game at the 12-minute mark of the first period on a deflection by sophomore forward
Johnny McInnis. The host Engineers responded at 19:22 when defenseman
Guy Leboeuf’s quick shot from 15 feet away beat MSU junior netminder
Phil Cook before he had a chance to get set.
Defenseman
Nick Bailen fired a shot from the point with RPI on the power play the beat a screened Cook at 8:59 of the second period and it became a 3-1 RPI lead at 19:36 when
Joel Malchuk retrieved Cook’s clearing attempt along the wall and put it into an open net.
RPI’s fourth goal came at 7:29 of the final period after defenseman
Pat Koudys beat Cook with a one-timer from the point with the Engineers on the power play.
MSU was outshot in the game by a 38-32 margin. RPI was two-for-five on the power play, while the Mavericks finished the game zero-for-six with the man advantage.
Now 1-1 on the year, Minnesota State continues nonconference action with UMass-Lowell visiting Mankato Friday and Saturday.
