Lee Backstops Mavericks to 1-0 Win at #18 RPI

10/7/2011 9:32:00 PM

Troy, N.Y.  ---  Minnesota State got stellar goaltending from senior goaltender Austin Lee in gaining a 1-0 win in season-opening men’s college hockey action at 18th-rated RPI in Troy, N.Y. Friday night.

Including 17 saves in the third period, Lee gained his first career shut-out in stopping all 36 shots he faced in the game.
The two teams battled through two scoreless periods before the Mavericks broke through at 18:30 of the final frame.

With the teams playing in a four-on-four situation forward #Eriah Hayes# broke in on the right side and took a shot that Engineer goaltender Scott Diebold got a pad on, but could not not control the rebound.  Senior defenseman #Cameron Cooper#, who had joined the rush with Hayes after giving him the puck in the neutral zone, retrieved the errant puck and wristed it over Diebold into the leftside of the net.  The goal for Cooper, his fifth career marker, is his first career game-winning goal.

MSU was outshot in the game by a 36-20 margin.  RPI was 0-10 on the power play, while the Mavericks finished the game 0-for-six with the man advantage.

The two teams play again at RPI’s Houston Field House with at 7:00 p.m. EST scheduled.
