Mankato, Minn.-- Fifth-ranked Minnesota State (13-1-1, 10-0-0 NSIC) defeated #25 Winona State (11-3-1, 9-1-0 NSIC) 1-0 Saturday afternoon in a battle which determined the leader in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Both teams entered the match with perfect 9-0 records in the NSIC with just three games remaining in the regular season after Saturday. Winona State has previously won the NSIC title in each of the last seven seasons.
Minnesota State sophomore midfielder Tori Meinhardt’s seventh goal of the season was the games deciding factor. Meinhardt’s goal came from a pass down the middle of the field from junior midfielder Brianne West in the 39th minute of the first half.
The Mavericks outshot the Warriors 26-8 in Saturday's game.
Although she felt the pressure many times, freshman goalkeeper Molly McGough tallied one save on the day and earned her seventh shutout of the season.
The Mavericks (13-1-1, 10-0-0 NSIC) host Upper Iowa (5-6-2, 3-4-2 NSIC) on Sunday afternoon for their annual senior day. The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start at The Pitch at Gage Towers in Mankato.
