MSU Soccer Program Tallies its 200th Win

10/15/2011 4:54:00 PM

Box Score Moorhead, Minn.-- A game after MSU head coach Peter McGahey recorded his 50th win, Minnesota State reached the 200th-win plateau in its 17th year of the program. MSU junior Brittany Henry’s five-point  performance propelled the Mavericks with a second half push, giving them the 3-0 victory over MSU Moorhead in Moorhead, Minn.

The Mavericks own a 200-102-18 record all-time and are currently on a ten-game winning-streak.

“The 200th win is a tribute to alumni, players, administration, staff and fans,” said Minnesota State soccer head coach Peter McGahey. “It’s about the success of everybody that has been a part of Maverick soccer and believed in it. You have to acknowledge everyone that has contributed to the program and brought it to where it is today.”

The Mavericks and Dragons remained scoreless after the first half, while MSU outshot MSU Moorhead 8-2 through 45 minutes.

With a nine-game winning streak on the line,
Tori Meinhardt wasted no time in the second half when she scored 42 seconds into the second half on a ball from Brittany Henry.

Henry then scored two goals in the 49th minute and the 53rd minute of the game to boost her to 11 goals on the season. MSU sophomore
Courtney Vallarelli marked her fifth assist of the season on Henry’s goal. Henry now leads the NSIC in points with 27 this season.

MSU goalkeeper
Molly McGough shut out the Dragons and made four saves in the game. The shutout gave McGough her fifth of the season as she has also played the first half in two team shutouts.

McGough and the Mavericks have shut out teams in five consecutive matches, something that hasn’t been done since 2005 at Minnesota State.  MSU has given up just two goals in its eight Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference games this season.

Eighth-ranked Minnesota State (11-1-1, 8-0-0 NSIC) extends it winning-streak to ten games as it heads to Minnesota, Crookston., Sunday for a 1 p.m.
