Mavericks Drop 4-1 Decision to UMass-Lowell

Mankato, Minn. --- Visiting UMass-Lowell capitalized on a first-period five-minute power play by scoring twice en route to claiming a 4-1 nonconference win at Minnesota State Saturday.

MSU defenseman Mike Louwerse was assigned a five-minute major for checking from behind at the 15:37 mark of the opening frame and the visiting River Hawks took advantage.
 
The first goal came on a wrist shot from the bottom of the circle from Derek Arnold at 17:12. Then at
at 19:02 Matt Ferreira beat MSU netminder Phil Cook on a rebound.
 
In the second period, UMass scored its third power-play goal of the game when Joseph Pendenza’s back door rebound tally put the River Hawks up 3-0 at 14:27.
 
Minnesota State made it a 3-1 game at 8:56 in the third period when senior winger Justin Jokinen rifled the puck past UMass goalie Doug Carr for his first goal of the season. His goal was assisted by Charlie Thauwald and Matt Leitner
 
UMass closed out the scoring when Derek Arnold took a pass from behind the net and beat Cook with a shot along the ice.
 
UMass, now 2-0 on the year, outshot the Mavericks by a 35-25 margin and was fthree for six in power play attemps.  The Mavericks, who own a 1-3-0 mark on the year, were zero-for-five in power play chances on the night.

 Minnesota State up for the Mavericks is a trip to Denver for a two-game series with the Pioneers October 21-22.
