  Big Rapids, Mich. --- The Minnesota State Mavericks defeated Ferris State Friday afternoon in their season opener, 1-0.

The Mavericks came out strong in the first half, posting three shots on goal, while the Bulldogs failed to put a shot on net.  Freshman Courtney Vallarelli (Eagan, Minn.) scored the games only goal at the 26:05 mark, with the assist coming from sophomore Nicole Dooher (New Hope, Minn.).

In the second half, the Bulldogs came out strong and got a shot on goal in the first 40 seconds. Ferris State posted six shots on goal in the second half. Ferris State kept the pressure in the final seven minutes forcing two shots and goal and one off the post. The Mavericks ended the contest with a total of five shots on goal, compared to the Bulldogs six.

Sophomore goalie Chelsey Eley (Waunakee, Wis.) started the game for the Mavericks, but recorded no saves.  Goaltender Brittany Cygan (Eagan, Minn.) started the second half for Minnesota State, where she recorded six saves and help the Maverick gain their first victory.

The Mavericks improve 1-0 this season and take on the defending NCAA National Champions Grand Valley State, Sunday at 11:00 a.m. The match will be held in Allendale, Mich.
