St. Cloud, Minn. --- Minnesota State held a 2-0 lead after two periods of play, but St. Cloud State rallied to claim a 3-2 victory to knot the WCHA play-off series at 1-1 in a game played at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud Saturday.
Neither team was able to score through the first 20 minutes, but senior forward Geoff Irwin finished off a nice pass from Kael Mouillierat at 6:39 of the second period to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead. MSU took a 2-0 lead at 16:39 on a 40-foot slap shot from the point from junior defenseman Ben Youds that beat Mike Lee with the Mavericks on the power play. The goal is the third of the year for Youds.
Junior forward Garrett Roe powered SCSU's third-period comeback, playing a role in all three goals. David Eddy started things at the 52-second mark with a wicked shot that beat MSU freshman Phil Cook on the shortside, with Roe assisting on the play. Roe scored his 17th goal of the year at 6:31 to tie the game and then 20 seconds later, at 6:51, tallied his 18th with what proved to be the game-winner.
MSU, which was 14-0-0 on the year when leading after two periods of play prior to tonight, owned a 36-26 advantage in shots on goal in the contest.
MSU is now 16-19-3 and St. Cloud State ups its record to 21-12-5 with the victory.
The teams conclude the best-of-three series Sunday with a 7:07 p.m. face-off scheduled.
