Third Period Dooms Mavericks vs. #5 UND

Mankato, Minn. --- Minnesota State saw its four-game winning streak end Friday night with a 4-3 Western Collegiate Hockey Association home loss to #5 North Dakota.

The Mavericks drew first blood early on in the game on a goal that saw sophomore Eriah Hayes deflect a shot from senior Channing Boe past Sioux sophomore goaltender Aaron Dell at 0:48 in the first period.

Senior defenseman Kurt Davis then gave MSU a 2-0 lead when his shot from the the left circle beat Dell at 6:47. The Sioux struck back on a two-man advantage at 19:16 with a shot from the slot by senior blueliner Chay Genoway.

After a scoreless second period, UND tied the game at 7:40 in the third period on a shot by senior Matt Frattin shot that went in off the shoulder of MSU sophomore netminder Phil Cook. UND then took the lead just seconds later with a goal by senior Evan Trupp at 7:51.   At 10:27 UND got its third goal of the period just off the face-off from senior Jake Marto. A power play goal for MSU came from a rebound of the left side from Ben Youds at 16:44, but it was not enough to close the gap.

MSU outshot UND 38-34, with Aaron Dell making 35 saves on the night and Phil Cook, 30.  
   
The Mavericks fall to 6-7-4 on the season (4-7-2 WCHA), while the Sioux improve to 12-5-2 overall (10-3-0 WCHA). The teams  meet again Saturday with a 7:07(CST) scheduled start at the Verizon Wireless Center in downtown Mankato.
