Mavericks Complete Sweep With 3-2 Win Saturday

      Lowell, Mass.  --- Minnesota State topped UMass Lowell 3-2 in nonconference men’s college hockey action in Lowell, Mass., Saturday.

The Mavericks also defeated the River Hawks by an 8-3 margin Friday in earning the nonconference road sweep.

Riley Wetmore’s snapshot over the left shoulder of MSU sophomore Phil Cook at 18:15 gave UMass Lowell a 1-0 first period lead.

Freshman forward Zach Lehrke, the trailer on the play, took a pass from Chase Grant and beat UML’s Doug Carr at 1:42 of the second frame for this first career goal and the game stood tied 1-1 at the end of two periods of play.

The two teams combined to score three goals at the beginning of the third period. 

Senior defenseman Kurt Davis got his third goal of the year at the :55 mark, but UML responded at 2:48 when Wetmore scored a shorthanded marker. MSU’s Chase Grant put the Mavericks up for good at 5:48 when his turnaround shot from 15 feet out beat Carr between the pads.

MSU outshot UML by a 36 to 28 margin in the victory.

Now 4-6-4 overall, Minnesota  State returns to Western Collegiate Hockey Association action next Friday and Saturday with a home series vs. the University of Minnesota.
