Mavericks Swept by Pioneers

Denver, Colo.-- Minnesota State was downed 6-1 by the University of Denver for the second straight night of Western Collegiate Hockey Association play. MSU is now winless in its last five games.

The Mavericks dominated much of the first period until the tide turned when seniors Kurt Davis and Mike Louwerse received penalties. Denver would score three goals in under six minutes.

DU forward  Anthony Maiani scored on the 5 on 3 power-play to put Denver on the board. The goal was assisted by Matt Donovan and David Makowski.

At 18:53 into the first, Pioneer forward Luke Salazar deflected a Jason Zucker shot right under the crossbar past Phil Cook.

Beau Bennett would put Denver up 3-0 when Minnesota State turned the puck over near the blue line. Bennett came across the high slot and put it upstairs over Cook's shoulder.

Both teams would force 11 shots on goal in the first period.

MSU forward Eli Zuck would cut the lead to two at 16:24 into the second period. Louwerse came across the blue line hitting Zuck breaking down the middle putting it past Sam Brittain.

DU forward Luke Salazar would score his second goal of the game in the third period on a backhander past Cook. Jared Mermis was credited with the assist on the fourth Pioneer goal.

The Mavericks would earn a couple of penalties, giving Denver another 5-3 power-play opportunity that they would capitalize on. David Makowski gave DU a 5-1 lead as he beat Cook stick side on the power-play.

Maiani would tack on a short-handed goal at 18:25 past Austin Lee to give the Pioneers a 6-1 victory.

MSU outshot the Pioneers 35-30 in the game.

Minnesota State would go 0-7 on the power-play, with Denver going 2-6.

The Mavericks were 0-14 on the power-play this weekend.

MSU (2-6-4 overall, 2-6-2 WCHA) will have next weekend off. The Mavericks next action will be against Mass-Lowell Nov. 26-27 in Lowell, Mass.
