Wayne, Neb.-- MSU beat Wayne State 3-0 Sunday in a NSIC showdown. This continues the Mavericks winning-streak to four games, improving their Northern Sun record to 5-1-1 this season.
Minnesota State forward Brittany Henry scored two goals in less than three minutes apart in the first half. The first goal came at 32:06 from eight yards out, Sarah Schellinger was credited with the assist. Henry scored her second goal with a header off a corner kick in the 35th minute. Cassie Weik booted the corner kick which gave her the assist on the goal. Henry now leads the team in points with six goals and a assist on the season. The Mavericks blasted ten shots on goal in the first half, while the Wildcats had two.
With not much action in the second half, Jessie Audas gave the Mavericks insurance as she scored her third goal of the year at 77:07. The Audas goal was assisted by fellow senior Emily Petrovich. MSU had two shots on goal in the second half, giving them 12 on the day. Wayne State couldn't find the goal in the second half and ended the day with two shots on goal.
Maverick goalkeeper Chelsey Eley played the first half for the Mavericks, making two saves and giving her the victory. Eley now owns a 5-3-1 record this season. Brittany Cygan played the second half although the Wildcats didn't give her any action. Cygan holds an impressive .864 save percentage this season. Eley and Cygan each played a half in both games this weekend, helping MSU accomplish two shutout wins.
Minnesota State is now 7-4-1 this season and 5-1-1 in the NSIC. The Mavericks return home next weekend to play Minnesota, Crookston on Saturday at noon and MSU Moorhead at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
