Phil Cook stopped 20 shots in earning his first career shut-out

Cook's First Career Shut-Out Lifts Mavericks Past Tigers

   Mankato, Minn.  ---  Minnesota State freshman goaltender Phil Cook stopped all 20 shots he faced in backstopping the host Mavericks to a 3-0 nonconference victory over RIT Saturday in Mankato.
 
MSU took a 1-0 lead at 3:24 of the first period when Kael Mouillierat’s blast from 30 feet out beat RIT’s Shane Madalora with the Mavericks on the power play.  Senior forward Geoff Irwin then scored MSU’s first shorthanded goal of the year at 12:12 of the first and the Mavericks held a 2-0 lead at the end of the opening stanza.
 
Sophomore Justin Jokinen’s third goal of the year, which came on a scramble from in front of the net, made a 3-0 lead at 13:49 and Cook shut the door the rest of the way to preserve the win. 
 
Senior forward Zach Harrison had an assist on all three goals and now leads the Mavericks in scoring with five goals and 14 assists for 19 points on the year.
 
MSU defeated RIT Friday (6-1) and now has three sweeps on the year.
 
Now 7-2-1 in its last ten games, MSU outshot the visiting Tigers 36-20 in the game with Cook picking up his third win of the year.   The Mavericks are now 11-9-2 overall for 2009-10.
 
MSU resumes Western Collegiate Hockey Association action with a pair of games at the University of North Dakota.
