Minnesota State Drops Overtime Contest to Nebraska-Omaha
Davis Tallies Lone Marker for Mavericks in Nonconference Contest in Omaha Saturday
Omaha, Neb. --- Minnesota State and Nebraska-Omaha jousted into overtime before UNO came away with a 2-1 win Saturday in Omaha in a nonconference men’s college hockey contest.
MSU has now gone 5-2-1 in its last eight games.
The teams traded goals in the first period with MSU striking first. Junior defenseman Kurt Davis worked a give-and-go with sophomore forward Adam Mueller to put the puck past UNO freshman netminder John Faulkner at 6:12. The goal is the second of the year for Davis. UNO responded at 11:15 with Nick Fanto snapping a shot past MSU sophomore Austin Lee low on the stickside.
The score remained 1-1 through a scoreless second period. Then, at the :43 mark into overtime, UNO’s Rich Purslow collected a rebound and put it back into the net past the outstretched left arm of Lee for the game-winner.
UNO held a 39-24 advantage in shots on goal on the night.
Now 9-9-2 overall for 2009-10, the Mavericks take next weekend off prior to hosting Rochester (N.Y.) Institute of Technology Jan. 1-2. The two-game series with RIT will be the third consecutive nonconference weekend for the Mavericks.
