Box Score Mankato, Minn. --- The Minnesota State Mavericks defeated the University of Mary Marauders in first round of the NSIC tournament Wednesday afternoon.
The Mavericks played a tough match in brisk conditions. MSU posted six shots on goal in the first period as Mary didn't post a shot.
The Mavericks stayed strong into the second period where they posted 10 more shots with five on goal. Senior defender
Abby Maxson (Maple Grove, Minn.) posted two shots on goal along with, senior midfielder
Gina Paletta (Omaha, Neb.), freshman forward
Brittany Henry (Stillwater, Minn.) and freshman midfielder
Cassie Weik (Oakdale, Minn.). Others with shots on goal in the first two periods were; junior forward Laura Leber (Council Bluffs, Iowa), junior forward
Jesse Audas (Omaha, Neb.), and freshmann midfielder
Brianne West (Omaha, Neb.).
In the first overtime period MSU posted two shots, while Mary battled close by with two shots. In the second overtime period the Mavericks posted two shots to try and earn the victory. At the end of the second period score still, 0-0.
Shootout begins with five players alternating shots, Mary went first. For the Mavericks West made the second Maverick shot, as Mary strikes back earning one to keep it even. The fourth shooter for the Mavericks senior midfielder Natalie Bullis (Madison, Wis.) shoots it past the goalie, Mary strikes back to keep it even once more. The final shooter for the Mavericks, Leber drills it past the goalie to earn the advance.
Senior goalkeeper
Sheila Reynolds (St. Charles, Ill.) tallied three saves in the match. One save came in the second period where the other two saves came in the first overtime period. Reynolds now has a save percentage of .878 percent. Reynolds now has eight shutouts on the season and 20 career shutouts.
The Mavericks now 13-3-2 overall and 9-3-2 in NSIC will advance and play the winner of today's match between first-ranked, Winona State and eighth-ranked, Concordia-St. Paul on Friday afternoon.
