Anchorage, Alaska  ---  Minnesota State got a career-high four goals from senior Jerad Stewart in overpowering Alaska Anchorage, 8-2, in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association game played at UAA’s Sullivan Arena Friday night.

MSU jumped out to a 3-0 first period lead on a pair of goals from Stewart and freshman forward Eriah Hayes. A goal from UAA senior forward Kevin Clark reduced MSU’s lead to two, but freshman forward Tyler Pitlick’s fourth goal of the year near the end of the period made it a 4-1 Maverick lead.

A goal by UAA’s Nick Haddad’s at 13:18 was the only scoring of the middle frame and MSU held a 4-2 advantage after two periods of play.

Kurt Davis tallied at 4:36 and then ten seconds later at 4:46, and then Stewart tallied MSU’s sixth goal for his first career hat trick. Senior forward Jason Wiley goal his first goal of the year at the 14-minute mark and Stewart notched his fourth goal at 15:58 to make it 8-2. The four goals by Stewart is MSU’s first four-goal game since Shane Joseph accomplished the feat in a 9-6 win at Colorado College on March 1 of 2003.

The eight goals by the Mavericks is also the most goals scored by MSU since an 8-5 win over Denver in 2004-05.

MSU, which owned a 39-15 advantage in shots on goal, is now 4-6-1 on the year, 2-6-1 WCHA.  UAA, which went zero-for-four with the man advantage now stands 4-8-0, 2-7-0 WCHA on the year. MSU converted on one-of-seven power plays.

The Mavericks and the Seawolves conclude the two-game league series Saturday with a 7:07 p.m. face-off scheduled.
