Mavericks Fall Short to Bulldogs in First Round of NCAA Tournament

Box Score Denver, Colo. --- The Minnesota State Mavericks lost a tough battle to the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs, 2-0, in the first round of the 2009 NCAA Division II Central Region women's soccer tournament, Friday afternoon in Denver, Colo.

Looking to avenge a loss from the Bulldogs earlier in the season and move on into the second round of tournament play, the Mavericks came into the first period posting three shots with two on goal.  Junior forward Laura Leber(Council Bluffs, Iowa) tallied two shots with one on goal. Freshman midfielder Brianne West(Omaha, Neb.) tallied a shot on goal. The bulldogs fought back in the first period earning two goals as the Mavericks end the first period with a two-goal deficit.

Hoping to dominate the second period the Mavericks came up short posting seven shots with only one on goal. Adding the one shot on goal came from senior defender Abby Maxson (Maple Grove, Minn.). The Bulldogs posted three crucial saves to hold the Mavericks scoreless in the second period. Unable to respond to the Bulldogs attack the Mavericks end their 2009 season in Denver, Colo., Friday afternoon.

Senior goalkeeper Sheila Reynolds (St. Charles, Ill.) faced seven shots and tallied three saves in the first period.  Reynolds gave up two quick, tough goals in the first period. Holding the Bulldogs scoreless in the second period, Reynolds tallied two more saves in the second period. Reynolds ends the 2009 season with a save percentage of .852 percent with 75 saves and eight shutout matches. Reynolds also finishes her career with a save percentage of .810 percent with 183 saves and 20 career shutouts.

Minnesota State made their fifth appearance in the NCAA Division II women's soccer tournament and third consecutive trip.

The Mavericks end the 2009 season 13-5-2 overall and 9-3-1 in NSIC.
