Richard Canole was named assistant coach during the summer of 2017 and will work with the jumps, multi and pole vault.

Canole, who spent the previous two years as an assistant coach with the Swan Valley (Mich.) High School track and field programs where he helped lead the program to its first conference championship in school history, served as an assistant coach at Saginaw Valley State (Mich.) from 2013-15. During his time with the Cardinals, he coached student-athletes that established five school records, earned five All-America honors, achieved NCAA national qualifying marks 24 times, coached the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference female indoor "Field Athlete of the Year" and female indoor "High Point Scorer (MVP)."

Canole also spent two years (2010-12) at Wayne State (Neb.), where coached the 60m and 800m, hurdles, jumps, multi's and the javelin toss.  Under his tutelage, athletes broke 27 school records and four conference records.  Four athletes earned nine All-American honors and his athletes posted 29 NCAA provisional marks. 

Canole coached at the collegiate level beginning 1998, when he was an Assistant Track & Field/Cross Country Coach at Ferris State. 

A 1989 Saginaw Valley State graduate, he was a three-time All-American, and Academic All-American and was the national runner-up in the 35-lb. weight throw during his time as a Cardinal.
