MANKATO, Minn. --- As the 2016-17 athletic year continues, get to know a few of the student-athletes with a Maverick Q&A series. Part one features Minnesota State volleyball sophomore Sydney Powell from Lindstrom, Minn.

When did you start playing volleyball?
"When I was in third grade."

Why Minnesota State?
"Many reasons – I loved the athletic facilities, thought it was a good sized campus, and liked that it wasn't far from home. Also, I liked all of the coaches, players, and thought being a Maverick was a good fit for me."

What is your favorite memory as a Maverick so far?
"There's so many it's hard to choose, but I would have to go with our preseason trip to Florida. We were flying in what was supposedly supposed to be a hurricane so we honestly didn't know if we were going to make it or not. But we did. There was some light rain the first couple of days, then nothing but sunshine. We had a nice day spent on the beach and had a 4-0 record coming home. Good times!"

Did anyone in your family play college sports?
"Nope, I'm the first!"

What is your favorite part about being a student-athlete?
"It's probably my favorite and least favorite part but I enjoy how busy it keeps me. There's always something more you can be doing to excel on the court or in the classroom"

What is your major and why did you choose it?
"Double major in biochemistry and toxicology. I've always loved science. It's difficult, but I enjoy the challenge."

What do you like most about being on the team?
"Honestly just having the opportunity to play. I enjoy showing up every day and playing the sport I love with some of the best teammates around."

Why did you choose your jersey number?
"I've always been a fan of small numbers. Four was my high school number and two was my club number, but both were taken so I thought three was next best."

Any pregame rituals?
"Usually I like to sit in my locker and listen to music. Don't tell coach, but I always have some kind of candy right before the games. I love candy."

What is a goal you have for your college career?
"I would love to make it into the 1,000 kill club. It's definitely do-able and I'm determined."
