Margenthaler Agrees to New Contract

Mankato, Minn. --- Minnesota State University officials announced that they have reached an agreement on a new five-year contract with men's basketball coach Matt Margenthaler.

The agreement becomes effective July 1, 2016.

"It is our pleasure to announce this new contractual agreement with men's basketball coach, Matt Margenthaler," said Kevin Buisman, Minnesota State Director of Athletics. "Matt has earned this opportunity by developing a Maverick basketball brand that is consistent with success. We want to recognize those efforts with a contract that parallels the elite level Coach Margenthaler has built our program to nationally at the NCAA Division II level. Behind his strong leadership, we look forward to many outstanding performances from his teams in the years ahead."

The all-time winningest men's basketball coach at Minnesota State with a 322-129 (.713) mark, Margenthaler is in his 15th year with the Mavericks. He entered this season ranking 15th in the nation in winning percentage amongst active NCAA Division II coaches.

Including a NCAA Division II Final Four appearance in 2011, the 1991 Western Illinois grad has led Minnesota State to ten trips to the NCAA tournament. Under his guidance the Mavericks have won seven conference regular season championships (three North Central Conference and four Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) and three league tournament titles (one NCC and two NSIC).

During the course of his tenure with the Mavericks the Macomb, Ill., native has had seven All-Americans, 33 of his players have been named all-conference and 19 student-athletes have earned academic all-conference recognition. Margenthaler was named NCC Coach of the Year three times and has been named NSIC Coach of the Year on three occasions.

"I would like to thank our AD, Kevin Buisman, and President Davenport for their commitment to me, my family and to the basketball program here at Minnesota State," said Margenthaler. "I appreciate this University's faith and belief in our staff from the day we arrived here in Mankato. It's exciting to work with an administration that shares a common goal for the future of Maverick Basketball. I am looking forward to continuing this level of success on and off the court."
