Minnesota State Takes Flight to Rochester, N.Y.

What's On Tap: Minnesota State will look to keep their 1-0-1 start going as they travel to Rochester, N.Y., to take on the Tigers of RIT this weekend.

The series kicks off Friday night at 6:00 p.m. E.T. before wrapping up Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. E.T.

Looking Back at Last Weekend:  A year ago, the Mavericks hadn't posted a "W" until 18 games into the schedule. Minnesota State opened this season going 1-0-1 against Union College. In Friday's matchup, the Mavericks stuck with the Dutchwomen all the way through, with freshman Corbin Boyd (Minnetonka, Minn.) netting the game tying goal with 1:48 remaining on the clock. Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the five-on-five overtime period, notching the final score at 2-2. Maverick captain, junior Anna Fiegert (Landshut, Germany) also netted her first career goal in the game. Saturday's game proved to side in Minnesota State's favor as the Mavericks trumped the Dutchwomen by a score of 3-0. Junior goaltender Brianna Quade (Newcastle, Ont.) claimed her first career shutout in the victory as well.

A Weekend of Firsts: Along with the first win of the season coming last weekend, a few other firsts took place. Bench boss John Harrington posted his first win as the head coach of the Minnesota State women's hockey team, while netminder, Brianna Quade, recorded her first career shutout. Junior defenseman Anna Fiegert and freshman forward Corbin Boyd netted their first career goals. Freshman forward Emily Antony (Plymouth, Minn.) notched her first helper of her career as well.  Boyd was rewarded for her efforts as WCHA Rookie of the Week, posting a goal and an assist in her first two games.

A Look at the Tigers: RIT is coming off a 2014-15 campaign that saw the Tigers finish 15-19-5 overall and 5-12-3 in College Hockey America, en route to finishing in sixth place in the conference. A couple of RIT's most notable wins from a year ago came in the CHA Tournament where they went 4-0 defeating the top two teams in the conference in Mercyhurst and Syracuse to move on to the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers season ended as they met #1 Minnesota in the first round, losing by a score of 6-2. Offensively, RIT averaged 1.8 goals per game and 26.1 shots per game a year ago. Defensively, RIT allowed 2.2 goals per game and 28.9 shots per game on average. The Tiger power-play connected at .076%, while its penalty-kill was effective 82.4% of the time it took the ice.

The Tigers are led by head coach Scott McDonald who will begin his tenth year at the helm of the program and owns a 186-72-23 overall career record and a 56-50-13 overall record since the program's inception in 20112-13. RIT's top returning scorers from 2014-15 include: Jr. Mackenzie Stone (6-10--16), Sr. Carly Payerl (7-6--13), and Sr. Jess Paton (6-7--13). The Tigers return junior goaltender Brooke Stoddart who played in eight games (4 starts) and recorded a 2.3 goals against average and a .912 save percentage a year ago.
