Box Score Rohnert Park, Calif. --- What a difference a day makes. Twenty-four hours after posting just 25 points first half points and turning the ball over 21 times, the Maverick offense responded with a 43-point first half en route to an 88-63 victory over Notre Dame de Namur in the 2010 Ron Logsdon Basketball Classic hosted by Sonoma State University.
“We were better tonight than we were yesterday,” said head coach Matt Margenthaler. “I am glad we went through this out here because we will see it on the road this year in our league. Bottom line, we came out here and got two wins and that was our goal.”
The Mavericks – who never trailed in the contest – raced to an early 12-4 lead thanks in part to eight points by senior guard Cameron Hodges. Hodges converted on a pair of traditional three-point plays during his offensive surge to pace the Mavericks.
Hodges wasn’t the only player who showed put together a nice little personal run for the Mavericks in the opening half as senior guard Joe Drapcho scored seven consecutive points in the closing minutes of the first half as the Mavericks opened a 43-23 edge at the break. Drapcho led all Mavericks in the first half with 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting.
The Argonauts pulled with in 12 at 71-59 with 5:33 remaining in the game however that was as close as they would get in the second half as MSU outscored NDNU 17-4 in the final minutes to ice the win.
Minnesota State finished the game shooting 54.1 percent from the floor, a vast improvement from its 35.3 percent the night before. The Mavericks also hit on 76 percent of their free throw attempts in the win (19-of-25) and saw its bench outscore NDNU, 18-2. MSU also outrebounded the Argos, 37-28, including 11-8 on the offensive end of the floor.
Senior guard Jefferson Mason led MSU in scoring with 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the floor. Hodges and Drapcho also finished in double digits with 14 and 12 points respectively.
Redshirt freshman post Connor O'Brien added 12 points on 6-of-10 shooting, go with four rebounds. Mason led all Mavericks with seven rebounds.
The Mavericks (2-0) host Michigan Tech Friday at 6 p.m.
