Four Different Players Score as Minnesota State Downs Wisconsin

11/23/2012 10:37:00 PM

Madison, Wis. --- Minnesota State got goals from four different players en route to a 4-2 road victory at Wisconsin in a men’s Western Collegiate Hockey Association game played in Madison, Wis.,  Friday night.

Freshman forward Dylan Margonari wired a shot over the shoulder of Landon Peterson at 2:11 of the first for his third goal of the year in getting things started for the Mavericks.  The Badgers tied it up just over a minute later on a Michael Mersch tally, but Minnesota State regained the lead at 10:18 with sophomore center Matt Leitner redirecting a pass from Margonari through Peterson’s legs.

UW’s Ryan Little forced a turnover and deposited the puck into the net past Maverick freshman netminder Stephon Williams at 11:57 of the second period and after two periods of action the score stood tied at 2-2.

Two goals in the final frame gave MSU its first win in Madison since the 2007-08 season. Senior forward Eriah Hayes fired a shot along the ice that beat Peterson on the stickside with the Mavericks on the power play at 5:48 of the third period in what proved to be Hayes’ third career game-winning goal.  Senior forward Eli Zuck’s empty-net goal closed out the scoring at 19:15.

Margonari and Leitner both had a goal and assist in the game, while sophomore defenseman Zach Palmquist contributed two assists.  Sophomore forward Jean-Paul Lafontaine extended his point-scoring streak to five games (3-5—8) with an assist on Hayes’ game-winning goal.

Minnesota State, now 4-5-2 overall and 2-5-0 in WCHA games on the season, was outshot by a 34-24 margin in the game. Williams, who earned his first career win and stands 1-3-1 on the season, turned aside 32 shots. The Mavericks finished one-for-four  on the power play, while Wisconsin was zero-for-four  with the man advantage.  The game was played in front of 9,118 fans at Kohl Center.

MSU and Wisconsin close out the two-game series Saturday night with a 7:07 p.m. face-off scheduled.
