Auburndale, Fla. --- The Minnesota State men’s tennis team has played to a 1-3 record in its last three matches its Florida trip. The Mavericks split a pair of decisions yesterday, losing to Palm Beach Atlantic (9-0) before earning a 5-4 victory over Albion. This afternoon, Minnesota State fell to Mesa State, 9-0.
The Mavericks opened the day with a 9-0 loss to Palm Beach Atlantic, which was ranked #5 in the South region and #35 in the nation as of last week’s ITA rankings. The Sailfish featured the nation’s 27th-ranked player at #1 singles, Krasimir Atanasov, who earned a 6-0, 6-0 win over senior Chad Berger.
Against Albion, the Mavericks owned a 5-4 victory. Minnesota State opened the match with a sweep in doubles action.
Freshmen Cole Jensen and Mitch Barr opened doubles play with an 8-6 victory at the #2 slot. Senior Chris Webber and sophomore Marco Vazquez followed with an 8-4 win at the #1 flight before Berger and senior Adam Doll closed out the doubles portion with an 8-6 win at the #3 flight.
The Mavericks dropped the first decision in singles play before Doll earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory at the #4 flight. Barr sealed the Maverick win with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 victory at the #3 slot.
In today’s match against regional rival, Mesa State, picked up three wins in doubles before closing the match with a sweep in singles play.
Minnesota State (2-6) concludes action in Florida tomorrow as it plays Florida Institute of Technology at 2 p.m.
