David Backes (2003-06,  Men’s Hockey) (student-athlete category) --- Completed three-year college career totaling 46 goals and 73 assists for 119 points in 115 games... 2005-06 RBK Second Team All-American...Blaine, Minn., native named 2005-06 All-WCHA Second Team and was 2004-05 All-WCHA Third Team...Member of 2003-04 WCHA All-Rookie Team, was a two-time WCHA All-Academic selection and a two-time team MVP...Two-time team scoring champion was named First Team Academic All-American in 2005-06... Graduated from Minnesota State with a degree in Organizational Studies in 2014...Selected by St. Louis in second round (62nd overall) of 2003 National Hockey League draft, made NHL debut Dec. 19, 2006 in a game at Pittsburgh...Two-time Olympian (Vancouver in 2010, Sochi in 2014), named captain of the Blues prior to start of 2011-12 season...Signed free agent deal with Boston in summer of 2016...Along with his wife, Kelly, are involved with several charitable endeavors, including animal rescue efforts and pet adoption drives. In 2013, founded Athletes for Animals - a group of professional athletes with a shared passion for rescuing and protecting the welfare of homeless pets nationwide.
