Under the guidance of third-year coach Butch Raymond, MSU compiled an 18-10 mark while earning a share of the 1975-76 North Central Conference regular-season championship with an 11-3 record in league play. The championship was the first NCC men's basketball title for the program.
Team qualified for the NCAA tournament for the first time and after dropping a 72-67 decision in double-overtime to Wisconsin-Green Bay, earned third place at regional tournament with 95-73 victory over Nebraska-Omaha. Coach Raymond was named NABC District V Coach of the Year.
Senior forward Elisha McSweeney led the NCC in scoring with a 22.9 points per game average and was named All-NCC First Team. Freshman guard Gene Glynn set a league record with 9.6 assists per game. Team finished second at NCC Holiday Tournament and McSweeney was named to All-Tournament Team.
Team members included head coach Butch Raymond and assistant coaches Jerry Bodelson and Gary Sailes, and student-athletes Curt Clark, Tom Fix, Gene Glynn, Elisha McSweeney, Bernie Miller, Mark Olson, Mark Ostergaard, Doug Probst, Terry Seeman, Ross Swanson, Gilbert Williams, Jeff Winter and Gene Zachow.
