The 1970-71 team was the first MSU volleyball team to compete in national tournament when it made an appearance at the second DGWS National Intercollegiate Volleyball championship which was held at the University of Kansas in February of 1971.
28 schools participated and MSU finished with a 3-3 pool play mark. MSU defeated Purdue, Kansas State and Iowa and lost to Sul Ross and Auburn and split with Iowa and Oregon to finish third in pool play. MSU missed making the championship round by one game. For the year, MSU compiled a 17-2 match record (39-2 in games).
Coached by MSU Hall of Famer Georgene Brock, members of the team included Cheryl Engel, Ann Dalager, Susan Marshall, Joan Dauphinee, Rachel (Spencer) Rulmyr, Donna (Dauwalter) Bernards, Margaret (Leher) Ballman, Val Strachan, Vicki Davis and Lucinda (Wall) Mitchell.
