Vaulters Lead Mavericks in Sioux Falls

Sioux Falls, S.D. --- The Minnesota State women's track and field team traveled to a chilly South Dakota to participate in the Vance Butler Invitational.

The pole vaulters led the day as they stood first and second when all was said and done. Faryn Wirkus (Edgar, Wis.) captured the title with a vault of 11'11.75". Senior Bryanna Sudman (Eden Prairie, Minn) followed right behind in second. Wirkus joins Sudman in having reached a provisional qualifying standard.

Anna Veroeven (North Mankato, Minn.) also put in a great performance in the triple jump finishing second with a jump of 36'11.5". Sophomore Brieanna Puckett (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) took home fourth in the long jump at 17'7.5". Amanda Stangler (St. Cloud, Minn.) and Kayla Lindell (Cold Spring, Minn.) finished sixth and eighth, respectively in the high jump. Emma Edelen (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) wrapped up the field events with her fifth-place posting in the discus at 134'7".

The track events saw a very balanced effort all around despite the less than ideal conditions. Karlona Gregory (Minneapolis, Minn.) finished eighth in the 100-meters with a time of 12.56. Puckett and Sid'Reshia Floyd (New Hope, Minn.) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 200-meters with Puckett on top at 25.52.

Brooke Foreman (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) finished in fifth-place for the 100-meter hurdles with a final time of 14.57. Freshman Kellie Wong (Ankeny, Iowa) ended the day tied for eighth at 15.43. Taylor Glover (Spencer, Iowa) took the top Maverick spot in the 400-meter hurdles in second with a time of 1:04.39. Foreman was behind in fourth at 1:07.20.

Maddi Sjelin (St. Michael, Minn.) captured another second-place finish for MSU as she posted a 2:20.97 in the 800-meters. Megan Allen (Grand Rapids, Minn.) was not far behind in sixth with a time of 2:24.37. In the 1500-meter event, Halee Peterson (Cloquet, Minn.) finished fifth with a time of 4:58.40 and Erin Baker (Grand Rapids, Minn.) took sixth at 5:01.39. Rounding out the distance events was Samantha Soupir (Omaha, Neb.) in the 3000-meter steeplechase with her fifth-place finish of 12:01.40. Kimberly Allan (Flagstaff, Ariz.) followed in seventh.

The 4x100-meter relay team, comprised of Briana Holt (Maryland Heights, Mo.), Floyd, Gregory and Puckett grabbed the second first-place posting on the day with their time of 49.34.
