Men's Track and Field

Mavericks Flash Brilliance at Mt. SAC Relays

Walnut, Calif. --- Following a successful first evening in California, the Minnesota State men's track and field team took their performance to the next level on Friday as they took part in the annual Mt. SAC Relays.

The tone would be set early from the same group that lit the fire the night before.
Kyran Stewart (Camilla, Ga.), Emmanuel Matadi (St. Paul, Minn.), Richard Wilhite, Jr. (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Anthony Gustafson (Faribault, Minn.) built off their solid showing last night in posting a time of 40.15 in the 4x100 relay event.  Even though this finished them second in the meet, they now become the new record-holders taking down the previous record by 0.01 set in 2013.  Gustafson, who was also on that 2013 team, anchored the Mavericks as they find themselves firmly planted at the top of the Division II standings with this automatic qualifying time.  They also are now ranked 24th across all divisions.

Matadi become well versed with record-breaking during the indoor season, and today that trend continued in the 100-meter dash.  Matadi posted a time of 10.26 which matches Moo Muhammed's 1988 time. With this, he was automatically qualified for the National Championships and is the number one individual in Division II for the event.  He also ranks 11th across all divisions.  Stewart would also impress with his time of 10.39.  This ranks him tied for fifth in Division II.

The 200-meters saw much of the same for those two.  Both posted new personal-records with Matadi running a 20.70 and Stewart posted a 21.03.  This ranks them second and sixth in Division II, respectively.

Following one of the most impressive indoor seasons in MSU history,
Myles Hunter (Conyers, Ga.) returned to the track in the 110-meter hurdles.  In his first action of the season, Hunter posted a time of 14.03 which automatically qualifies him for the NCAA Outdoor National Championships.  He currently sits in the fourth position in Division II.

Minnesota State will conclude action at Mt. SAC tomorrow, as well as compete in the Beach Invitational, held in Long Beach, Calif.
