4x100-Meter Relay Team Sets the Tone in California

Los Angeles, Calif. --- The Minnesota State men's track and field team is showcasing their abilities in the Golden State this week commencing at the California State University, Los Angeles Twilight Open.

The evening got off to a fast start thanks to the 4x100-meter relay team.  Comprised of
Richard Wilhite, Jr. (Minneapolis, Minn.), Emmanuel Matadi (St. Paul, Minn.), Kyran Stewart (Camilla, Ga.) and Anthony Gustafson (Faribault, Minn.), the Mavericks cruised to a time of 40.19.  This ranks them number one in Division II and 25th across all levels of collegiate track and field.  Their time falls just 0.03 seconds behind the current school-record set two seasons ago.

Wilhite would also compete in the 100-meter dash finishing sixth with a final time of 10.77.  Freshman
Javontee Brice (Bradenton, Fla.) finished sixth in the 400-meters posting a time of 50.21.  Victor Bowen (Milwaukee, Wis.) grabbed first-place in the 800-meters setting a new personal-record time of 1:53.17.  Senior Austin O'Brien (Bettendorf, Iowa) followed with a first-place title of his own in the 1500-meters at 4:02.94.  

Ben Ojika (New Brighton, Minn.) and Nathan Hancock (Independence, Mo.) ran the 110-meter hurdles with Ojika coming out in third with a time of 14.68.  Hancock followed in sixth at 15.05.  

Freshman
Geno Bullard (Nassau, Bahamas) got the field events rolling in the long jump finishing sixth at 22'8".  Khalil Jor'dan (Eagan, Minn.) grabbed third in the triple jump at 46'4.75" with David Pearcill (Eagan, Minn.) behind in fifth at 45'8".  Sophomore Frank Veldman (Eagan, Minn.) took second in the high jump at 6'9.5".  This mark raises his national ranking to 11th in Division II.  Ojika also placed in sixth at 6'3.5".

The Mavericks will be back on the track tomorrow morning as they are set to compete in the Mt. SAC Relays held in Walnut, Calif.
