Men's Track and Field

Minnesota State Ready for National Championships

Mankato, Minn. --- The ninth-rated Minnesota State men's track and field team will be sending four individuals to take part in five events at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships on March 13 and 14 in Birmingham, Ala.

The Mavericks are coming off a fourth-place finish last year which matched the best finish for the program since 1992.  MSU has never won a National Championship but has finished second twice in 1985 and 1989.

Nathan Hancock, Emmanuel Matadi, Kyran Stewart and Myles Hunter will be the athletes representing the Mavericks in Birmingham.

About Head Coach Jim Dilling: In his second year as head coach, Dilling has continued on with the success that was seen from his predecessor, Mark Schuck.  The Mavericks scored 163 points en route to the NSIC Championship, which marks the programs fourth-straight and fifth since they joined the conference in 2009.  Dilling has also been named the NSIC Head Coach of the Year and Central Region Head Coach of the Year during both years of his guidance.

Nathan Hancock: One of the more decorated Mavericks of recent memory, Hancock returns to the championships for the fourth time in his tenure at MSU.  The three-time All-American from Independence, Mo. finished second last year with a final points total of 5,449.  Hancock enters the championships as the 11th-rated individual with a high point total of 5,232.

Myles Hunter: Also making a return trip to the national championships is the Conyers, Ga. native, Myles Hunter.  The sophomore has been nothing short of spectacular this season gaining much national recognition.  Earlier this season in Brookings, S.D., Hunter finished the 60-meter hurdles 7.64 seconds.  This time broke the Division II national record and stands as one of the top-times across all individuals in the United States.  Hunter enters the championships as the number-one rated runner in the event and looks for a better result from last season where he just missed qualifying for the final round.

Emmanuel Matadi: The St. Paul, Minn. native will be making his first trip to the Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships.  The Louisville transfer is no stranger to the national stage as he also participated in the NJCAA championships when he began his collegiate career.  Matadi will participate in the 60-meter dash where his the number one ranked participant with a posting of 6.66, and in the 200-meters with the second-best time of 21.05 (both of which are new school-records).

Kyran Stewart: The Albany State transfer will be returning to the championships, but in his first attempt as a Maverick.  The Camilla, Ga. native qualified in the 200-meters with a time of 21.37, which is the seventh-best time in Division II.
