BROOKINGS, S.D. --- The Minnesota State men's track and field team ended first-day action at the SDSU Indoor Invitational claiming a couple new school-records in the process.
Senior Emmanuel Matadi (St. Paul, Minn.), already holding the school-record in the 60-meter dash, took the reigns of the 200-meter record as well. Matadi ran a 21.10 which surpassed Jerrell Hancock's 2013 posting by 0.01. Today's effort also marks as the only automatic qualifier in Division II. Teammates Richard Wilhite, Jr. (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Kyran Stewart (Camilla, Ga.) also had an impressive showing finishing third and fifth, respectively. Wilhite's final time of 21.65 provisionally qualifies him giving three Mavericks either automatic or provisional qualifying times.
Not to be outdone, senior Zach Gearman (Burnsville, Minn.) claimed a record of his own by running a 1:20.46 in the 600-meters. Gearman took over one of the longest standing school-records passing Joe Vortherms time of 1:20.87, which he set in 1982. Victor Bowen (Milwaukee, Wis.) posted a career-best time as well running a 1:21.42, which finished him in fifth-place.
Two Mavericks finished in the top-ten for the 1000-meters event. Ryan Ness (St. Paul, Minn.) grabbed sixth-place with a time of 2:33.07. Teammate Brendan Gessner (Lino Lakes, Minn) slid into tenth at 2:34.24. Matthew Longen (Centerville, Minn) finished with a final time of 15:54.47 in the 5000-meters, establishing a new personal-record.
Freshman Calvin Deike (Mankato, Minn.) finished in a rare six-way tie for first in the pole vault as they all topped out at a height of 13'11.25". Fellow freshman Geno Bullard (Nassau, Bahamas) also had a successful day in the long jump taking home eighth with a jump of 22'2.25".
