Mankato, Minn. --- Minnesota State has announced that
Matt Schmidt has been named Associate Head Athletic Trainer.
The Arthur, Iowa native joins the Mavericks after serving as the head athletic trainer for Sioux City of the United States Hockey League the past two seasons.
Schmidt, who also worked with Sioux City as the athletic trainer for the Musketeers from 2000-03, spent 11 years at the head athletic trainer at Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa from 2003-2014 where he also served and strength and conditioning coach for the Red Raiders and was an instructor in the kinesiology department.
Schmidt's responsibilities with Minnesota State will include providing general oversight, coordination and delivery of athletic training and sports medicine services for the University's NCAA Division I men's and women's hockey programs. Schmidt will also supervise graduate assistants, oversee the department's athletic training supply inventory along with maintaining the Impact Concussion site for all student-athletes.
Schmidt, who worked with USA Wrestling at the NGB's World Team Trials in 2006 and 2007, U.S. Open National Championships in 2007, and the Cadet/Junior National Championships (2006-present), was selected to travel with the USA National Greco-Roman Team for a tournament in Russia in 2013.
He earned an undergraduate degree in physical education (minor in health and career concentration in athletic training) from Northwestern in 2000 and owns a master's degree in Health, Physical Education and Recreation from the University of South Dakota in 2006.
He and his wife, Gena, have three children - Gabby, Gage and Grady.
