Getting to Know... Hannah Turnbull

1/22/2013 1:15:00 PM

Hannah Turnbull, a senior thrower from Hayward, Wis., is in her fourth year with the Maverick’s women’s track and field program. She is the daughter of Scott and Sheila Turnbull and is majoring in management at Minnesota State.

“Hannah has really developed as a leader over her past four years, especially with the throwers. She has had some ups and downs over her career, but has used those to help mentor the freshmen on the team,” said head coach Jen Blue about Hannah’s leadership. Coach Blue also talked about her expectations of Turnbull this season, “Hannah came in this fall in great shape and it has really shown through fall track and our first couple of meets. She is going to focus mainly on the shot put this indoor season and has already started off the season where she left off last season. We are hoping she can score some points for us this year in the conference meet.”

Ten Questions with Hannah Turnbull

1) What made you choose Minnesota State over other schools?

Academically, I liked the classroom sizes and how small the campus was.  Athletically, I have a great relationship with my coaches and MSU supports and encourages an attitude of winning and excellence in every aspect.”

2) What is your favorite event to compete in?

“My favorite event is shot put. I’ve been throwing for eight years, so it’s challenging for me to continue to progress and get better every day.”

3) Why did you pick your current major?

“My major is management with minors in business law and business administration. I chose management because I feel that being in athletics has taught me how to lead and I want to continue to be a leader throughout my professional career.”

4) What are your hobbies outside track and field?

“I love to help coach youth and high school hockey program, hunting, fishing, four-wheeling, camping, and anything outdoors.”

5) What is your best memory while on the track and field team?

“My best memory would be my first meet as a freshman. It was so surreal and my entire family drove four hours to come and watch two minutes of action.”

6) Do you have any premeet rituals?

“I like to get up early, make sure I get a good pre-meet meal in. I basically relax until it’s time to warm up. Then I start going over the mental and technical focuses for the day. I like to listen to music and focus, and then when I’m in the ring, it’s all business!”

7) What is your favorite movie?

“I love all movies! But if I had to pick, I’d pick Kicking and Screaming with Will Ferrell.”

8) If not track and field, what other sport would you want to play?

“Hockey, I played hockey since I was five and was Ms. Hockey Wisconsin in 2009. My entire family is involved in hockey, and I have an older brother who played at UW-Madison for the Badgers (Podge) and is playing professional hockey now. My sister is also a heavily recruited leader on her high school team.”

9) Who has been your biggest inspiration while on the team?

“My biggest inspiration has been my head coach, Jen Blue. She is an incredible motivator and an avid supporter. She’s the kind of coach that makes you want to give everything you have to everything in life.”

10) What are your plans after graduation?

“After graduation, I plan to find a career in management, coach hockey, and eventually start a family.”
