Stephon Williams has been named
Red Baron® WCHA Rookie of the Week as Minnesota State earned an unprecedented road sweep at the University of Wisconsin last Friday and Saturday.
Leitner, a 5-9, 170-lb., native of Los Alamitos, Calif., struck for two goals and three assists for a five-point weekend for the Mavericks in the two wins over the Badgers. Leitner had a goal and assist as the Mavericks claimed a 4-2 win Friday and added a goal and an assist in another 4-2 victory Saturday. In doing so, he has extended his point-scoring streak to six games (2-7--9) and leads the Mavericks in scoring on the season with 3-12--15. Leitner stands for 19th in country in points per game (1.25) and is tied for fourth in assists per game (1.00).
Williams, who hails from Fairbanks, Alaska, backstopped Minnesota State to the school’s first-ever road sweep at the University of Wisconsin. The 6-2, 190-lb., netminder gained his first win as a collegian in last Friday’s 4-2 road victory at Wisconsin, making 32 saves on 34 shots, including all eight power play shot attempted by the Badgers. His second career win came Saturday with the Mavericks duplicating Friday’s score with a 4-2 victory over the Badgers, Williams had 33 saves on 35 shots in the game including five stops nf six power play shots. For the weekend, Williams stopped 65 of 69 shots for a .942 save percentage and 2.00 goals against average. For the year Williams stands 2-3-1 with a 2.46 goals against average and a .909 save percentage.
MSU is 5-5-2 on the year and hosts Bemidji State this weekend in a pair of league games at Verizon Wireless Center Friday and Saturday.
