Minnesota State Announces Yearly Awards

Mankato, Minn. ---  Minnesota State head women's hockey coach Eric Means and the MSU women's hockey program recently announced the 2010-11 team awards.

Most Valuable Player-
Sophomore forward
Lauren Smith (Burnsville, Minn.) - Smith played in all 36 games this season...Finished the season with a team-high 104 shots, as well as a team-best 11 assists...The sophomore finished the 2010-11 season with 4-11-15, which ranked second on the team.

Most Improved Player- Freshman forward
Kari Lundberg (Woodbury, Minn.) - Lundberg played in 32 games this season...Finished 2010-11 with 53 shots and 1-5--6...Earned her first career point, a goal in 11/13/10’s 4-2 win over Ohio State.

Rookie of the Year- Freshman Forward
Kathleen Rogan (Vancouver, B.C.) - Rogan played in all 36 games this season...She finished the season with a team-best 12-9--21 on the season...Of her 12 goals, two were game-winners, two were short-handed and three were unassisted...The rookie tallied three goals in MSU’s 4-2 victory over UND earlier this season...The hat trick marks the first for MSU since former Maverick Ashley Young tallied three goals against Bemidji State in 2008...Earned WCHA Rookie of the Week on 10/27/10 and 11/17/11.

Tiffany Searles Award (All-around student-athlete)- Junior forward/defense
Jenna Peterson (Hopkins, Minn.) - Peterson played in 24 games this season...Tallied 12 shots and took four penalties for eight minutes in 2010-11.

Maverick Pride Award- Junior defenseman
Ariel Mackley (Burnsville, Minn.) - Mackley was the 2010-11 captain and played in all 36 games this season...Mackley finished 2010-11 with 2-2--4 and 49 shots...Her first goal and first assist came in  MSU’s sweep over St. Cloud...Mackley has recorded four career goals, three of which came against SCSU, scoring one her freshman year, one her sophomore year and one this season.

Daniel Mundahl Service Award- Junior forward
Emmi Leinonen (Valkeakoski, Finland) - Leinonen played in 30 games during the 2010-11 season...Owner of 3-5--8 and 61 shots on goal...Her first  goal  of the season was a power play tally in the Mavericks season-opener against Niagara.
