Chida Honored as MSU Closes Midwest Championships

Omaha, Neb. --- The Minnesota State men’s swimming and diving team finished second in the 2010 Midwest Conference Championships with a score of 597 points. The four-day long meet wrapped up today.
Sophomore Matt Chida was named the Swimmer of the Meet while freshman Tom Gansnick went home with Swimmer of the Meet honors.
Junior John Powers won the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 17:09.92, while senior Jose Rosales came in fifth in the meet with a mark of 18:28.15.
A trio of freshman paced MSU in the 200-yad backstroke led by Kyle Hellyer’s time of 1:56.02. Sam Heidelk was fifth in 2:03.86, while Paul Creger was seventh in 2:12.14.
 
Gasnick finished second in the 100-yard freestyle touching in :46.27, which was a “B” standard, while sophomore Daniel Wright was third with a mark of :46.93, which was also a “B” standard. Junior Chris Gogel was fourth in :47.41, while freshman Paul Pallardy as eighth in :48.26. Freshman Keaton Brown was 1th in :49.41, while sophomore Jacob Longacre 12th in :49.58. 
 
Senior Brian Parks finished second in 2:09.37, which was a “B” standard, while freshman Shane Bjork was fourth in 2:15.21.
 
Chida won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:56.53. 
 
In the 400-yard freestyle relay, MSU turned in a first-place time of 3:05.77. The team was made up of Gasnick, Chida, Gogel and Wright.
 
The Mavericks are off until the NCAA Championships next month.
