Gogel, Chida and Gasnick All Claim Victories

Omaha, Neb. --- The Minnesota State men’s swimming and diving team sits in second-place with 214 points after the second day of the 2010 Midwest Conference Swimming Championships held in Omaha, Neb.

St. Cloud State leads the four-team event with 228 points.


The Mavericks opened the day with a prelim victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:28.02.  In the finals, freshman Tom Gasnick, senior Brian Parks, sophomore Matt Chida and sophomore Daniel Wright paced MSU to a second-place finish with a time of 1:24.86.


In the 500-yard freestyle, junior Chris Gogel finished with the second fastest time in the prelims, touching in 4:45.63.  In the finals, Gogel paced MSU with a first-place finish with a time of 4:42.78.  Junior John Powers finished seventh in the race with a time of 4:55.79, while senior Jose Rosales was eighth in 4:56.97.  Freshman Sam Heidelk finished 11th in the race, touching if 5:05.01. 


Chida won the prelims of the 200-yard individual medley and was the only athlete to hit the “B” standard in the prelims touching in 1:54.13.  Chida also earned a victory in the finals as he bested his morning swim with a time of 1:54.87.  Also earning points for the Mavericks in the finals was freshman Kyle Hellyer who was fourth in 2:01.02.  Freshman Shane Bjork finished eighth in 2:02.40, while freshman Paul Creger was 10th in 2:10.79.


Gasnick won the 50-yard freestyle with a “B” standard time of :21.21 while Wright finished second in :21.74. Parks added a fifth-place finish in the race with a time of :21.89, while Longacre was eighth in :22.10.  Freshman Paul Pallardy closed out the event with an 11th-place finish for MSU touching in :22.43. 


The Mavericks finished first in the 400-yard medley relay final with a time of 3:27.49.  The relay was made up of Hellywer, Parks, Chida and Gasnick.


The four-day long event continues Friday.
